In 1943, a vision was born in the hearts of two faithful men, Reverend F.A. Meyer and Reverend T.W. Bray, as they prayed together in a quiet wooded area on the west side of Thomasville. They asked God to one day bring a church to this land, and just months later, a small group from First Baptist and Rich Fork Baptist churches came together to start a mission. They gathered for Sunday afternoon services on that very lot, laying the foundation for what would become Greenwood Baptist Church.
In 1946, God moved in the heart of Reverend Charles Lee, inspiring him to establish regular services and form a mission committee to launch a new church. On November 24, 1946, Thanksgiving Sunday, Greenwood Baptist Church was officially born with 43 charter members, under the leadership of its first pastor, Reverend David W. Oldham. Construction began shortly after, and by Easter 1948, we held our first service in the new building.
Over the decades, we have faced many changes, but our mission has remained the same: to love God, love our neighbors, and love each other in Christ. Today, we are a vibrant congregation dedicated to serving our community, growing in our relationship with Christ, and spreading the message of His love. We strive to grow God’s kingdom by multiplying the number of Christ followers, both within our church family and in our community.
